Just like more than 2,100 alumni couples, graduating seniors Teddy and Haley (Schreiner) Berger found their happily ever after at 海外吃瓜. They just sealed the deal sooner than most.
The stars collided for Teddy, who is from Topeka, Indiana, and Haley, who from Bascom, Ohio, when they pursued their love for music and theatre as 海外吃瓜 freshmen.
鈥淲e officially met in Brenneman my first day on campus,鈥 Haley says, 鈥渂ut I barely have any memory of that. We really got to know each other through Greek life.鈥 He is a member of Rho Eta Delta and she is a member of Delta Sigma Chi; both are members of each other鈥檚 corollaries.
鈥淚 thought she was cute, but we didn鈥檛 know each other,鈥 says Teddy, who arrived a year earlier than Haley. 鈥淚 liked her from a distance. Finally, we took a leap and jumped in.鈥 At a Greek event, of course. A long talk two weeks before the end of the spring semester of Haley鈥檚 freshman year and Teddy鈥檚 sophomore year led to coffee dates at Bailiwicks, a local coffeehouse in downtown Tiffin. They had begun building their relationship from the ground up.
鈥淲e Skyped every day during that summer,鈥 Haley recalls. 鈥淥bviously, it just worked for us.鈥
Fast forward nine months, and the couple once again found themselves at Bailiwicks, accompanied by mutual friend Kristina Kamm, who, as it turns out, was an accomplice with Teddy on a huge surprise. Haley heard Disney music playing 鈥揳 curious choice for the coffee shop. She soon figured out why. She turned around to a video Teddy had compiled 鈥 Disney love songs set to the story of their relationship. It was Feb. 16, so Haley initially thought it was a belated Valentine鈥 Day gift. It was so much more.
鈥淗e came out and tapped me on the shoulder. I thought I was dreaming. He got down on one knee to the theme from 鈥楾angled,鈥欌 Haley says. 鈥淚 knew 100 percent that we鈥檇 get married one day, but I really didn鈥檛 think we鈥檇 get engaged until senior year.鈥
It turned out to be the best surprise ever. They married that summer in Haley鈥檚 hometown with about 400 guests in attendance. 鈥淏est day of our lives so far,鈥 she says.
While it鈥檚 not unheard of for students to marry while in college, it鈥檚 far less common these days. But Haley and Teddy have made it work 鈥 with a few adjustments and compromises.
鈥淚t was different at first,鈥 Teddy says. 鈥淧eople didn鈥檛 really know how to be around us, but they began to love it.鈥 His wife adds, 鈥淓veryone is normal about it now. All of our friends have been super supportive.鈥
Because they have had to balance hectic college life with married life, the couple is perfectly happy to carve out a little time to themselves now and then. And their friends have perfectly understanding.
After graduation, they鈥檒l have plenty of time to themselves, but not necessarily alone. They鈥檙e adopting a puppy and then moving to Nashville later this month to pursue theatre and music career opportunities.
鈥淓verything we do is hectic,鈥 Haley says, adding that they moved to a new place four days before their wedding. 鈥淪o this is going to be no different.鈥
Teddy is looking forward to a career in arts management and Haley in theatre. Teddy has navigated through Asperger鈥檚 syndrome, so ultimately, they would like to open a non-profit summer camp for children with autism. It鈥檚 something both are passionate about.
So, while their friends will wait until they鈥檙e older to tie the knot, it鈥檚 worked for Teddy and Haley. 鈥淩eally, it鈥檚 pushed us to be better people,鈥 he says.
鈥淵eah, sometimes you just have to take that leap,鈥 Haley adds.
